The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) initiative is a European Union derived for the prevention improper waste disposal. The directive seeks to promote the reuse of such waste so as to reduce its disposal, and strives to improve the ecological performance of all members involved in the handling of electrical and electronic equipment.
The RoHS directive is a European-derived initiative in which the elimination of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment is the key objective. The elimination of these substances will contribute to the protection of human health and the environmentally sound recovery and disposal of waste electrical and electronic equipment.
In 2006, China published a law entitled Administration on the Control of Pollution Caused by Electronic Information Products (ACPEIP)—often referred to as the China RoHS, due to similarities with the EU Directive for the Restriction of Hazardous Substances. The China RoHS only affects products and components within the Electronic Information Products (EIP) list.
GE's Measurement & Control business strictly complies with REACH (Regulation 1907/2006 on the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals, adopted by the European Union in December 2006). The business also works with suppliers to identify any potential implications of REACH on the availability of materials.
