Salt River Project First to Upgrade to GE’s Latest L-Frame Excitation Control Solution
Modernized solution replaces legacy control system, provides improved lifecycle value
LONGMONT, COLORADO- September 10, 2013 -GE’s (NYSE: GE) Measurement & Control business has upgraded an aging excitation control system at Salt River Project’s Navajo Generating System with the EX2100e Digital Front End (DFE). The new system, installed on a 750 megawatt unit, was commissioned recently and is operating successfully at the plant. This marks the first installation of an EX2100e DFE on the GE EX2000 L-Frame multi-bridge excitation system.
Navajo Generating System is a critical plant for Salt River Project and its other owners, providing electric services to customers across Arizona, Nevada and California, as well as pump water through the Central Arizona Project. To maintain reliable operations, the plant needed to upgrade its aging excitation control system. Salt River Project partnered with GE in upgrading to a new system that provided advanced features and enhanced lifecycle value. By migrating to the EX2100e DFE, Salt River Project benefits from control technology based on a GE’s Mark VIe platform making it easier and more cost-effective for Salt River Project to modernize and maintain its new excitation control system into the future.
- Salt River Project worked with GE for its knowledge of critical machinery and expertise with excitation systems to do a comprehensive analysis of the power plant's current assets to pinpoint potential challenges and risks related to the current system
- Guided by GE's expert team of dedicated engineers, the upgrade completed within the scheduled 10-day outage plan, avoiding unnecessary downtime
- GE's dedicated retrofit specialists also provided the plant with a custom migration design package, including site engineering, installation and commissioning to ensure a high quality installation and startup

Based on this successful installation, the plant has plans to work with GE to upgrade two additional 750-MW units within the next two years.”
