GE Installs Integrated Power Management System to Enhance Reliable and Sustainable Power Plant Operations

CHALLENGE

This leading aluminum producer required an integrated power management system (PMS) for one of its plants in order to provide generation load balance management for power loss and load loss during  internal power grid instabilities. Loss of electricity can result in potline losses, costing millions of dollars in lost production. 

GE AS PART OF THE SOLUTION

To validate the PMS, GE’s Control Solutions business used high-fidelity simulation and modelled the thermodynamic behavior of electrical grid and plant equipment, including turbines, generators and all relevant control systems. The simulation thermodynamic model included detailed representations of the smelter electrical loads; the power generation equipment; and the electrical network, including protective relay system, grid connection, and the Mark*VIe plant control system

GE’s Control Solutions team evaluated simulation results and helped optimize plant response time by changing control algorithms for the PMS and gas turbine. GE ensured the PMS and associated power equipment would react to any power grid instability within the shortest possible time. As a result, any possibility of complete power loss to the smelter plant is eliminated for all known instabilities.
