Oil & Gas - Separation


Located in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province, Haradh GOSP-1 is a critical gas/oil separation plant for Saudi Aramco, and its three motor-driven compressors play a vital role in maintaining the compression of the gas after it is separated from the oil. However, the company’s programmable logical compressor control system was aging rapidly and needed to be replaced.


The company chose GE’s Measurement & Control business to provide the advanced technology to automate the control process for the three compressors—marking GE’s first compressor control project with Saudi Aramco. The solution features GE’s Mark VIe control platform along with GE’s OptiComp compressor control algorithms and remote control capability from the plant’s existing distributed control system (DCS).


GE’s advanced technology solution automated the control process for each of the three compressors while improving performance and production. The new system provides such capabilities as anti-surge, motor limit, pressure control, discharge pressure, and pressure override control.

*GE’s Mark VIe technology offers flexible distributed architecture, which allows for lower installation and ongoing life-cycle maintenance costs. In addition, its model-based control technology provides enhanced performance based on improved design margins that provide more flexible operation.

*Other advantages of the Mark VIe technology are the plant-wide ControlST software suite, which simplifies operation and maintenance with a common software tool set and synchronized data set. GE’s technology offers scalable redundancy for increased availability, reliability, and platform flexibility. Integrated turbo-machinery and balance-of-plant controls simplify operation and maintenance with reduced life-cycle costs from a common control solution across the plant.

*GE also saved significant plant space by building a single platform to control all three compressors (two high-pressure compressors running in parallel and one low-pressure compressor running in series).

*GE performed surge tests on all units to help ensure optimal compressor performance. These tests enabled GE to enhance the performance of the low-pressure compressor and reduce degradation, ultimately expanded the operating envelope for that compressor.


Commissioned in early 2013, GE’s advanced technology automated the control process for the three compressors and is improving performance and production to the satisfaction of Saudi Aramco.
